Director's Notes: Fall 2008
Lauren Holmgren and Josh Dow of the Green Foundry at Sanctuary Arts have been diligently fabricating a 6 foot steel sculpture. It’s been an amazing project, relying on the fabrication and welding skills of Lauren and Josh and their circle of fellow Mass College of Art colleagues in a massive collaborative effort to get this art piece shipped on time. They are offering two classes this Fall, Stars & Pickles: Holiday Cast Bronze Ornaments, learning traditional lost wax casting, and Iron Casting Bonanza, usi ng sand molding techniques and pouring hot iron. Nothing is more fascinating than being part of the foundry process while creating your original art.

On a personal note, Steven Alden Carpenter and I have received a large bronze commission for a Fishermen’s Memorial to be placed on Portland’s waterfront. We are in the early stages of planning, pricing, and meeting with various Portland constituencies to get all the approvals before moving on to the fund raising stage. We will be creating the multi piece sculpture and designing the site as well. Steven is teaching a two Saturday class on The Artful Dry Stone Wall and I am teaching a Portrait Sculpture class.

New to Sanctuary Arts is professional illustrator and RISD graduate Teri Weidner, presenting Illustrating Children’s Books, which will take students from rough thumbnail sketches to a 10 – 16 page mock-up. Artist Mary Byrom, who has taken a number of classes here, is teaching, for the first time, The Art of Landscape Painting, a Saturday plein air and studio painting class. And innovative glass artist Susan Pratt Smith offers a new Fused Glass Ornaments workshop. A new collaboration between Sanctuary Arts and painter /printmaker Roger Goldenberg offers a series of printmaking workshops held at Roger’s Portsmouth Button Factory studio. And we continue the collaboration with Antoinette Schultze in her Eliot carving studio in a Stone & Wood Carving class. I have been taking that excellent class and will continue carving my Champlain Black marble piece. Maybe I will even complete it.

Cheers,
