Fish by Tom Glover

Starting at the end of the 19th century with Cezanne and his tilting planes; through Picasso/Braque and cubism; to the austere paintings of Diebenkorn and the photo collages of Hockney, we will explore abstract art. Various formal structures will be discussed and we will apply ideas and techniques of many different abstract painters to see how they achieved their creations. We will learn about processes and modes of thought that help lead to the development of abstract paintings. Oil and acrylic suggested, but gouache, watercolor, collage, and mixed media are also acceptable. Experimentation will be the emphasis. There is no right or wrong, so be daring! Also would recommend bringing more than one substrate to work on. Canvas board is fine, or canvas, or gessoed hardboard.
