Winter 2022

Of special interest is a 4 day Classical Portrait Intensive (SA1) offered by Joshua Langstaff, January 14 – 17. Working with a live model, Joshua will demo extensively at the beginning of each day. The importance of accurately blocking in shapes, modeling form and constructing a fully rendered drawing on toned paper, in a system based on the Atelier design of training painters, offers the perfect way to train your eyes and hands under the guidance of a Master Draftsman.

Joshua Langstaff also offers Classical Figure Painting (SA 12) exploring figure painting techniques that have been passed down from Master to student since the days of the Old Masters.

Robin Thornhill, In Your Atmosphere

Amanda Rouse joins us with a weekend workshop - Monoprinting (SA 15). This is an exciting printing method that combines painting and drawing with stamping, transfers, textures and a touch of chance! Use water-based inks to make painterly prints that are one of a kind. You won’t regret it!

Tom Glover has two offerings to keep us entertained through a long winter. Rocks & Docks (SA 3) takes advantage of the coastal region where we live. Rocky shores and commercial docks provide plenty of visual fodder for artists to explore. Birds, Flying Towards Spring (SA 4) provides an artistic examination of birds- their habits, habitats, structures while trying to capture their beauty.

We are all happy to be meeting in person again, engaged in the pursuit of learning the intricacies of art making. (Fully vaccinated folks only, of course) I love seeing the relief and satisfaction of folks coming together to study, socialize, and create. I hope everyone gets their booster vaccine and we all have a great winter making art!

Cheers,

Christopher

I’m happy pastel artist Robin Thornhill is coming back for a one day workshop, Lighten Up! Creating a Sense of Light in Pastel (SA 16).

She pitched in to lead a Plein Air pastel workshop when another pastel artist couldn’t make it and she received many kudos. So come learn how to add a sense of light to your pastels, with plenty of demonstrations, handouts and individual instruction.

Sean Kramer joins us once again to enlighten us with Contemplative Art Practices (SA 5). With an emphasis on process using art as a meditative practice, students will explore mandalas and yantras, spontaneous and intuitive art making while working with symbols, surrealist techniques, drawing personal journeys, and more. Sean is a former monk whose wisdom and curiosity create a safe, playful environment to make art in.
