summer 2022

Sanctuary Arts is pleased to have 4 new instructors bring their expertise to Summer classes.

Alyssa Grenning

Alyssa Grenning will be teaching Imaginative Drawing (SA 12) Thursday nights beginning June 9th. When I came across Alyssa and her work, I just knew I had to convince her to come teach at Sanctuary Arts. Our classes here have focused on technical proficiency. Her work, while technically very proficient, also celebrates whimsy and curiosity, mixed with risk taking. Trained as an illustrator, Alyssa is an artist and ecology-enthusiast who is currently working on a series of imaginative creature drawings with a portion of the proceeds going to The Nature Conservancy. Her class will introduce students to working from memory and life experience. Mark making techniques, ways to play with imagery, developing individual themes while encouraging curiosity through sketchbook and writing prompts, all are part of this not-to-be-missed class.

Kristin Fellows

Kristin Fellows entertains us with “The Small but Mighty Stamp”(SA 13), a workshop meeting two Sundays in July. Kristin has worked mostly in paper for the last 20 years, making crowns, flowers and paper baskets which are sold throughout galleries in New England. In this class, students will cut and carve and mount several stamps, in fun foam and rubber printing sheets. Create a variety of patterned papers with an infinite palette of stamping inks made with silk screen medium and acrylic paints. Plan on creating wrapping paper, patterned fabric, cards, origami, and paper flowers with the results of these “Mighty” stamps.

We welcome two new wheel throwing instructors, Sheridan Cudworth and Lindsey Howarth while Bob Ellis is absent this summer. Both instructors will teach beginners centering, trimming and glazing with high fire stone ware. Intermediate students can learn more complex shapes and sharpen their skills. Linsey Howarth taught community classes in Frog Hollow Vermont and worked production pottery at Salmon Falls Stoneware in Dover and currently runs her own studio in Berwick Maine. Sheridan Cudworth is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ceramics. In 2020 she was the recipient of an endowment through the Maine Crafts Association which funded an apprenticeship with Elaine Fuller, the owner of Red Door Pottery in Kittery.

Amy Brnger

Amy Brnger, who taught here long ago and now teaches workshops nationally and internationally and online, comes back to teach a one day workshop called Painting Seasonal Blooms in the Garden (SA 6) on July 9th. Amy's paintings are expressive, energetic and attempt to express the changing nature of living things. Amy will be working in and completing a demo in oils. Students will paint outside in the Sanctuary Arts gardens or if the weather is inclement, inside setups will be created for participants.

We offer a number of intensives this summer. En Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop (SA 1), a four day intensive with Sean Beavers, Plein Air Sketchbook Adventures (SA 5), a five day intensive with Bill Paarlberg, a four day Classical Portrait Intensive (SA 9) with Joshua Langstaff, and a three day The Art of the Sculpted Portrait (SA18) with Anthony Alemany.
