10 Weeks

Monday 2 - 5

October 7 – December 9

Big color and bold compositions! We will use flowers to work on building color and structure, and explore the nature of paint and the different effects that can be created using heavy impasto painting, wet on wet technique, washes and more delicate, thin glazes of color. As winter approaches we will push color to extremes as we brace for the winter grays and maroons. Students may bring in flowers, work from photos and there may be a set up or two to work from as well if needed. I am hoping to plan at least one field trip to Wentworth Greenhouse. There will be discussion of floral painting from the past, how it was used in the Renaissance, what it meant to the Impressionists, how it was used by modernists and up to the present day. We will consider the symbology of flowers in paintings through the ages. It is recommended that students bring at least two substrates to work on. All mediums and levels welcome.
