Director’s Notes Fall 2024

I love Fall! Here are two classes that take advantage of magnificent Fall weather. Bill Paarlberg offers Trees: Beauty, Structure & Fall Color (SA 3). His class is for artists of all levels and media who wish to explore sketching and painting trees. Students will work outdoors, and in the studio, to study various types and species of trees, and to learn how to best represent their shapes, volumes, and personalities, paying special attention to fall colors.

Bill demonstrates in pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor.

Russel Whitten comes back with Plein Air Watercolor (SA 4), a class that will meet at various locations, weather permitting. Russel is a master watercolorist who paints nearly every day and loves to share his infatuation with watercolor and painting the landscape.

For those who have some watercolor experience, Margaret Dwyer offers The Art of Negative Painting in Watercolor (SA 7). Her class focuses on the dynamic techniques of negative painting, putting the focus on subject matter by learning how to explore the space around it with lost & found edges and glazing. Negative painting is a game-changer when used effectively, allowing the addition of depth with unique colors and rich darks. You’ll see your paintings take on a dramatic new quality.

Two great introductory workshops are presented by master artist Joshua Langstaff.

If you’ve always wanted to paint in oils but didn’t know where to start, Joshua Langstaff offers All About Oil Paint (SA 12), a weekend class designed to teach you about essential materials such as paints, brushes, mediums and supports, while mastering safe handling techniques. Delve into the history of oil painting, and explore time tested painting construction techniques. Perfect for beginners and likely beneficial for intermediate artists, this workshop provides hands-on instruction from a classically trained painter.

Joshua also offers How to Draw What You See (SA 11), another weekend workshop. Students will begin by exploring methods for blocking-in shapes using several types of measurement, then examine the structure of light and strategies for capturing values accurately on paper. Projects will make use of a still-life objects under controlled light. This class is for all skill levels, whether you are a beginner looking to get off on the right foot, or an experienced artist looking to incorporate a classical drawing foundation into your practice.

If you have more time, Carol Morley offers Building Drawing Skills (SA 8), an 8 week class that will help you get started and build your confidence through step-by-step drawing exercises. The class will cover contour line drawing, how to shade to create depth and form, perspective and compositional skills. This is a fun and supportive class that will teach you the fundamentals of drawing and how to develop your own unique way of seeing and drawing.

We offer so many classes to enrich your life. Come learn to draw, paint, sculpt, make pots, dye

with indigo, and create unique jewelry pieces. We have it all.

Cheers,

Christopher
