Winter 2023

Winter seems to be a time to hunker down in my studio and let my creative juices flow. I’m always enrolled in a few art classes with instructors who can get me past what I already know how to do- who give me the knowledge for the next step or process that will allow my ideas to flourish. I’m so grateful for the instructors here at Sanctuary Arts who nourish our creativity. I love getting thanked on a daily basis for the artistically nurturing environment that has been my pleasure to oversee.

I am very happy to welcome watercolorist Kimberly Meuse to our roster of talented artist instructors. Kimberly and I showed together at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit this past August. I admired the professional quality of her work and asked her to come teach here. She’s a virtuoso watercolorist who, I am sure, has a lot of technical information to impart to those willing to undertake this difficult and thrilling medium.

We have lots of portrait and figure classes this semester!

Watercolor instructor Russel Whitten will be teaching a Figure Watercolor class for the first time this winter. Learn the basics of proportions, shadow forms and color mixing, then work with a live model as she relates to the surrounding environment. This will be a class not to be missed.

Joshua Langstaff offers Classical Figure Painting (SA 13). This is an oil painting class working with a live model, presenting techniques that have been passed down from master to student since the days of the Old Masters. Joshua demonstrates throughout the course, teaching how to create an accurate drawing that is then transferred to canvas or panel. He then demonstrates how to construct a carefully observed and finished painting with techniques based on the classical atelier system for training painters.

Two Bonus Portrait Workshops in January

Joshua Langstaff offers a 4 day Portrait Drawing Workshop on Toned Paper (SA 11).

Anthony Alemany offers The Art of the Sculpted Portrait (SA 17).

This is brand new! Introduction to Life Drawing for High School Students (SA 6) is offered by Anthony Alemany. Full Scholarships are available for any high school student who wants to learn how to approach drawing the figure from life. The systematic study of proportion, anatomy, and observation will all be covered in this charcoal drawing class. Explore gesture poses, portrait drawing, dynamic positions and drapery.

Anthony Alemany also offers Sculpting the Reclining Female Nude. Learn to model the figure from start to finish using a live model. Work through a single long pose at 1/3rd scale as you learn the skills and techniques for sculpting the figure from life.
Of course we have another 17 classes in Jewelry, Pottery, Bladesmithing, Botanical Illustration, Oil Painting, and Sketchbook Challenge, etc. Something for everyone.

Cheers,

Christopher
